In today’s edition of Facelifts That Only Made the Car Uglier The 2003 Cavalier, a lesson in making an ugly car, even uglier.
It looks so sad.
Then there’s the taillights, that Have a horribly cheap looking silver bow-tie integrated into an equally cheap looking pointless piece of trim. I’m guessing that trim was supposed to be chrome, but the chrome finish got bean counted out. Also for some reason they still have the outline of the old lights, and bumped out circles over the bulbs...
Oh and then there’s this steering wheel. I mean the old one was bad, but this is also ugly.

I always thought the facelift looked a bit better than the pre-facelift one. Of course, that’s not saying much on a Cavalier.

For me it’s the headlights that really bug me. I actually kinda like the earlier ones, the look sleek. In comparison the newer ones just look awkward to me especially with the little bit of bumper that fills in the spot where the old pointed headlight used to be

Interior is horrid, exterior is meh.
I actually do think the updated Sunfire looked a lot better than the pre-facelift Sunfire.

Is that a GTP Sunfire? was that a real thing?

The best thing to ever happen to the Cavalier was the Ecotec

Well it’s probly better than the 4 cylinders of turd in my wife’s 2001. I never understood why so many people hate 4 cylinder engines until I drove this car.

I actually have no clue, might have been one of those factory bodykits GM used to like to do in the early aughties.

The iron duke. Pretty awful. The ectoec is actually a damn good engine! And Im one of those that hates 4 bangers.

Ok, I’ll say it. Acura NSX. The original was perfect, lithe and purposeful.
The facelift just looks off to me. The face is more generic, and the wheels are too big.

I was in high school when these came out, and remember them already being the cheap used cars people bought in college just a couple of years later.
Its almost like GM just skipped the new car Chevrolet showrooms entirely and delivered these cars directly to used car lots from the factory.

Yo 2.4 Quad 4 was where it was at dawg. DOHC and 150 ish HP.

It did make damn near 200hp in top trim. But reliablity was not great.

(Remember we are talking about Cavaliers) I’ve always thought the back end of the facelift was better and the front was worse.

Well they really are that unpleasant to drive. I can’t imagine what would drive a man to go buy one of these instead of the Civic, Corolla, or even Focus you could have had to the same time. Not only was it not a great car went the design was new, but at the point of the facelift it was 8 years old.

But legally they couldn’t produce a car with pop ups anymore. Darn you pedestrian safty laws.

Wait the 2.2 in the 2001 Cavalier is an iron duke? Like the same Iron Duke that started production in what 1973? hahaha. No wonder it sounds like butt, and only revs to 5600rpm. That id not how a 4 cylinder engine should work.

Yep, a derivative of it at least. Its a pushrod 4 cylinder.
